Mat+

Comparison

Mat+ or Mindbody for your Jiu-Jitsu academy

Mindbody serves the whole fitness and wellness market, and it brings something we do not have: a consumer marketplace with millions of people looking for a class. Whether that is the right trade for a Jiu-Jitsu academy depends on how your mat actually fills up.

What Mindbody is good at

Mindbody positions itself as business management software with a marketplace attached, and it describes that marketplace as the largest in fitness and wellness. For a studio selling drop-in classes to strangers, that is a genuine growth channel — a shop window somebody else pays to keep busy.

It also covers a much wider surface than we do: appointments, practitioners, spa and wellness services, and businesses whose customers book one session at a time. If your week involves any of that, Mindbody is the serious option and it has been for a long time.

But a Jiu-Jitsu academy rarely fills its mat with strangers browsing an app. It fills with a friend brought to a Tuesday class, a parent who watched a kids session from the bench, and a white belt who stayed because somebody learned their name in week two. That is a retention problem, not a discovery problem.

The difference

What a Jiu-Jitsu academy needs that a fitness business does not.

Retention beats discovery on the mat

Mat+ watches the students you already have. It surfaces the ones whose attendance has quietly dropped off, the trials that never came back for a second class, and the members who are due a conversation — while there is still a relationship to save. Most academies lose more students out of the back door than they ever find in a marketplace.

Rank, lineage and the long road

A blue belt is four years of someone's life. Mat+ keeps belt and stripe history, who awarded each promotion and how long the student has held the rank, and builds graduation readiness from attendance, time at belt and curriculum coverage — the things a professor actually weighs.

A curriculum, not a class list

Your syllabus lives in the system: techniques mapped to positions, what has been taught this cycle, and how far each student has moved through it — seen in class, drilled, or in their game. Coaches plan the next block from what the room is missing rather than from memory.

The academy as a community

Training streaks, milestones, belt progress and the wall of people you roll with every week — Mat+ opens on your students' own academy, their own room and their own record, not on a directory of every gym in the city.

Be honest about which one you are.

Software you resent is worse than software you outgrow. Two short lists — read the one that sounds like your week.

Choose a wellness marketplace if

  • You sell drop-ins and class packs to people who have never met you
  • You run appointments or practitioner-led services alongside classes
  • Marketplace exposure is a real part of how you grow
  • You operate several very different business lines under one roof

Choose Mat+ if

  • Your students come from referrals, trials and word of mouth
  • Belts, stripes and graduations are the spine of your academy
  • You want the software to tell you who is drifting before they leave
  • You would rather grow on referrals and trials than on a marketplace listing

Straight answers.

Does Mat+ list my academy anywhere public?

Each academy gets its own public page for trials and enquiries, and those pages are indexable. Inside the app there is a Discover directory where students can look up other Mat+ academies — useful when they travel — and your academy can be hidden from it in settings. There is no consumer marketplace selling your class slots to strangers, and no advertising placed against your students.

Can students book classes and pay from their phone?

Yes. Students book, check in, sign documents, see their belt progress and manage their payment method from the app; guardians do the same for their children.

Is switching a mess?

We migrate your members, memberships and history for you, free of charge, and we do the cutover with you rather than handing you a CSV template and wishing you luck.

If a marketplace is what fills your room, use the marketplace. If your room fills because people keep turning up, use the system that understands why they do — and tells you the week they stop.

Your academy deserves a system built for the mat.
